 Medicare Rebates for Psychology Services

What Is the Medicare Rebate?

​

Under the Better Access Initiative, Medicare provides rebates for psychological services to individuals with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from their GP, psychiatrist, or pediatrician.

How Much Is the Rebate?

​

• Individual sessions: Medicare offers a rebate of $96.16  per 50+ minute session with a registered psychologist 

• Group therapy sessions: Rebates for group therapy sessions vary, with a standard rebate of $36 for a 1-hour session.

 

How Many Sessions Are Covered?

​

Medicare covers up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group therapy sessions per calendar year under a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

 

How to Claim Your Rebate

​

1. Visit your GP to discuss your mental health needs and request a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).

2. Book an appointment with a psychologist at Eutierria Psychology.

3. Pay for your session upfront— you can claim it later through Medicare.

Private Health vs. Medicare

​

If you have private health insurance, you may choose to claim through either Medicare or your health fund—but not both for the same session.
